Dissolved Air Flotation

A proven technology for more than 35 years.

Air Flotation is a predecessor to Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) and has been in use since the 1920’s. Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) was refined in the 1960’s and has been used in water and wastewater treatment since, primarily in Europe. Some of the first Air Flotation systems were installed in Scandinavia in the 1920s and a few are still in operation today.

Using ordinary air under pressure, the DAF method injects microscopic bubbles into the water being treated. The air bubbles adhere to flocculated organic matter in the water. The air bubbles make the particles buoyant, and they float to the surface, where they are skimmed away.

Until recently, DAF technology has not been used in the U.S. and when used, it has been primarily for wastewater treatment.
